Scraps! Glorious Scraps!

I have ALOT of scrap felt.  Expensive 100% wool felt that feels like a crime to waste.  In lots of little pieces that look like they wouldn't make anything.  But wait!!! I wouldn't be a World Domination overlord if I wasn't just a little resourceful, so behold! A new little range of felt brooches:

3 little Recon Units all in a row...So far I am concentrating on the Recons.  I did make an Occupational Force but he looks a little bit strange, if you have been to my market stall recently you will know what I mean..I wanted to show you all but his photograph did not turn out...hmmmmm...maybe he is a vampire Occupational Force..... that could explain a few things actually....Anyway, they are nice and little, about 5 or 6 cms big...

ooooo, I could just squeeze their little bodies, and in fact I do!  And, of course, there are zombies....

One day, I may actually be cured of loving zombies and watching images of them eating brains but I just don't see it happening any time soon...though sewing their eyes may just make my eyes stop working...

*And just as an aside, has anyone seen RU1014?!  Ever since he found his 'supposed' father all I have are a couple of garbled messages on Message Bank...

HiiRagi likes Julia deVille

I mentioned Julia deVille in the previous blog and it hit me that some people won't know who this amazing artist is...
She is an New Zealand artist living in Melbourne and is trained in taxidermy, jewellery and cobbling, with her present work inspired by the Momento Mori wave present from 15th-18th Century, and, of course, the Victorian period.  I personally love mourning jewellery, especially those made with human hair.  I am always amazed at how they plait and weave it all together.  Anyway, I digress...
DeVille uses silver and goldsmith techniques and combines them with taxidermy, hair and jet (that lucious black stone), and fear not, she only uses animals who have died of natural causes, she won't even use road kill.  In her artist statement on her website, she finds it particarly fascinating to be part of a society that blocks any reminder of death, as if it is a curse.  Her label is called Disce Mori, which is latin for 'Learn to Die'.  She sees her taxidermy as a celebration of life, preserving something beautiful, and looking at her work I totally agree.  I think it's amazing...

What I also like is that she puts her money where her mouth is and has donated her own body to Germany's Institute of of Plastination, which means when she dies she will be dissected, filled with a special polymer and preserved for exhibition.  Have I mentioned the word 'amazing'?  Rumour is she is also Nick Cave's girlfriend/partner...say no more.....

'We are the Machine' Exhibition

So I have finally managed to get it together to report on this little exhibition sid pulled together.  This is the piece I put in.  I made little trial samples of my robots as part of their evolution into the magnificent beings they are today.  No deformity was too hideous!  It was heaps of fun and I managed to score an amazing light box out of the deal too (Thanks Ruben! You ROCK!!!).   Here are some other images of my piece in the exhibition:
There were also some great pieces by other artists too:
This one is kinda 'Short Circuit' and yes, that is a real fish in its belly...
I like his lit up head...very cool
It's a bit blurry but if I could knit like this I would...Nice one Lena!

I really liked this, it's kind of Julia Deville.  His buggy eyes are awesome!
The lovely Pete Punkette with his robot which takes photos too!  And finally (but not least..)

Sid, yes, he is the one licking his elbow.  Apparently this is quite a difficult feat and we were lucky enough to be in the presence of not one, but TWO people with such a talent.  Mmm, you can tell there was free booze...don't you miss the old days when all openings had free booze?  I do...Anyway thanks for putting on such a great show Sidkins!!!!

Rantings for the weekend...

This is a great bit of street art from North Fitzroy, Victoria.  Street art is one of my most favourite things, I love how it makes the streets interesting and colourful and amusing and intriguing...I also marvel at the skill with a spray can...I'm more of a sticker person myself...much easier...it's more of a stick and run, or stick and look unassuming...yet feeling diabolical and covert all at the same time...Oh yeeaaahhhh....
Anyway, this week end is full of stuff.  Tonight at 5:30 if you are around Jimmy's Street and Skate pop in and have a look at the 'We are the Machine' exhibition opening, should be fun!
Or if you are skulking around Salamanca tomorrow, come and hunt me down on the St David's hillside.  Guys will be happy to know that the t-shirt drought is officially over and I have some new stock and new designs ready for you!  Those who have ordered stuff, can come and grab when ready.
Yay!!! Have a good weekend!!!!!
